Nobody warns you that after a certain age, closeness stops happening by accident.

Proximity used to do the work — the same classroom, the same street. After that, closeness has to be chosen on purpose, over and over, usually by the person willing to be slightly embarrassing first. Be that person. It is the whole trick.
